Warning signs

Signs your gas setup needs attention

  • Smell of gas

Even a faint smell that comes and goes. Treat it seriously and follow the steps below.

  • Yellow or orange flame

A healthy gas flame is mostly blue. Yellow, smoky flames point to a problem with burning.

  • Hissing sound

A hiss near the cylinder, regulator or hose when the stove is off is a warning sign.

  • Hard or cracked hose

Rubber hoses age. A stiff, cracked or bulging hose should be replaced by a professional.

  • Soot on vessels or walls

Black marks suggest incomplete burning that needs a check.

  • Cylinder emptying faster

Using more gas than usual can sometimes point to a slow leak.

Safety

Gas safety starts before there's a problem.

Every connection between your cylinder and your burner is a point to check. Regular attention keeps small issues small.

  1. Check

Notice the early signs: a yellow flame, a faint smell, a hose that has gone hard.

  2. Inspect

Have the hose, regulator, joints and valves inspected, especially after moving or renovating.

  3. Maintain

Service stoves and hobs regularly so burners and controls keep working as designed.

  4. Repair professionally

Gas faults are not DIY work. Leave repairs to a qualified technician.

If you smell gas

  1. Do not switch any lights or electrical appliances on or off.
  2. Do not light a match, lighter or stove.
  3. Turn off the cylinder valve and the stove knobs if it is safe to reach them.
  4. Open doors and windows, and get everyone out of the area.
  5. From outside, call your LPG distributor's emergency service (LPG emergency helpline: 1906).
  6. Have the system checked by a professional before using gas again.

Why gas repairs aren't DIY work

A gas appliance can look like it is working while a joint, valve or hose is slowly leaking. Tightening, sealing or replacing gas parts without the right tools and checks can make a small problem worse.

Regular servicing, an inspection after moving or renovating, and replacing ageing hoses are the simplest ways to keep a kitchen gas setup safe.
